Pixelmator Releases New Image Editor For Mac OS X

Pixelmator has released an eponymous image editor for Mac OS X systems. Pixelmator 1.0 provides advanced image editing and effects tools, workflow automation, and integration with other Mac-based photo software programs. According to Pixelmator, it's also the first GPU-powered image-editing program, meaning that it draws on the processing resources of the computer's video card instead of the main processor. That frees up the main processor for other functions when multitasking, and provides fast processing speed in systems with high-performance video cards.

Pixelmator 1.0 includes more than 20 image-editing tools, more than 50 filters, and more than 16 color-correction tools. It supports layer-based image editing and more than 100 image file formats, including Photoshop images with layers. The program's Transform tools can be applied to whole images, layers, or selections, and include items such as Skew, Distort, and Perspective. The program's interface uses floating tool palettes and drop-down menus in a way that looks similar to Adobe's Photoshop interface. It also provides a full-screen editing mode and a QuickMask mode. The integrated Photo Browser allows image searches with more than 50 types of metadata through integration with Spotlight, and Pixelmator supports Mac elements such as Dashboard widgets [http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/] and ColorSync color management. Pixelmator's drag-and-drop functions allow users to drag a photo from the Photo Browser or a Mac's built-in iSight camera onto an open image to add it as a layer.

The program also employs Automator to provide workflow automation. Photographers can use Automator's efficient drag-and-drop functions to set up series of image-editing processes that will run automatically.

Pixelmator 1.0 will be available from the Pixelmator Web site in late July 2007 for $59.
